Is symptoms thyroid or adrenals?

by wisie, May 31, 2008 01:28PM
hi, about 10 year ago i suffered from severe anxiety, panic attacks, and fear of social interaction which lasted about 7 years.I was unable to get medical help of fear of going to see gp so i rode it out and symptoms eased altogether and i was virtually symptom free for about 3 years. Then out of the blue i started getting mild light headedness which has been with me ever since. It seems to be controlled by the slightest bit of stress and it worse when out doors or driving. Im also easily tired and have bloodshot eyes a lot of the time. So i went to gp and had bloods done which showed tsh of 22 but normal t4 so was put on levothyroxine and have gradually brought tsh to normal for last 7 month now. The trouble is i still feel exactly the same so i was wodering if i could be suffering from adrenal fatigue caused by earlier panic attacks etc. And if so how do i convince gp of this.
Thanks

lee

I don't test for adrenal fatigue.  The standard way of testing for adrenal insufficiency is an ACTH stim test, but more simply an AM cortisol (BLOOD) of >=11 rules out adrenal insufficiency.

All doctors are supposed to test for adrenal status BEFORE prescribing thyroid medication.

Dr Lupo gave clear cut medical information on his practice and what tests need to be preformed for adrenal fatigue - please do not challenge his practice - nor his way of treating and testing his patients.

As for the adrenal fatigue question - yes - the tests suggested by doctor Lupo are adrenal testing. There is also another test which patients can take on their own and some doctors will order. That is a cortisol 24 hour saliva test.

It could be possible you had some adrenal crises during your period of anxiety.

Sorry was not challenging his clinical practices I often cut my comments short and they come off as sharp when they are not meant to be. I was simply stating a fact as I saw it. I was adressing Wisie about his GP because if it had been done he would have known about his adrenal status a little better. Even though the saliva test IMHO gives a better overall picture.

I do not wish to offend.anyone and will attempt to be more tactful.

God bless
Whitby
