Is there a link between Hashimoto and Chronic Urticaria????

by kdcdcd2, Oct 07, 2008 02:15PM
Back in 1994 I was diagnosed with Hashimotos and was told that it would turn into Hypothroid...so I have been taking Synthroid since. Well in April of this year I started breaking out in hives everywhere..so I saw a Dermatologist who said that the hives are urticaria and to see an Allergist. So I saw an Allergist who has determined that the hives are not caused by an allergy and wants to run blood work to determine if there is an autoimmune problem causing the hives. The Dermatologist says this is a waste of time because of the Hashimotos and to accept the fact that I won't be able find the true reason for the hives. In the meantime I am still breaking out even with the Allegra, Zantac and the Hydroxyzine I am taking. So with all this said should I have the blood work done, or should I see an Endo or is there a link between the two??? Can you please give me some insight?? I am frustrated.
Thank You

Yes - urticaria can be linked and keeping TSH in the low normal range may help (0.3-1.0) -- else, no suggestions from a thyroid standpoint.

I have a little more insight for you...get the tests, see an endo, and get an ultrasound of your thyroid. Ive had urticaria for 3 years. Allergist didnt even check for autoimmune disease. After years of symptoms and blood work normal, they have found 2 nodules and goiter on thyroid. Definate link.
