Is there an adjustment phase for Snythroid?

by NYNY2020, Apr 19, 2007 12:00AM
Hi, I was recently diagnosed with hypothroidism (MD said it's hashi, but didn't do additional tests). I've started taking 25 mcg Synthroid, but I'm experiencing side effects for the med. Shortly after taking the Synthroid, I feel "drugged" or slightly intoxicated for about 2 hours, sometimes w/ very mild nausea. This is my 5th day on Synthroid. (Prior to this I tried Levothyroxine for 5 days but had even worse side effects!) I'm wondering if I'm sensitive to the thyroid hormone?? Or if there is an adjustment peroid? My TSH is 10 and I have very mild hypo symptoms.  Can I expect the "drugged out" feeling I'm experiencing after taking the Snythroid to eventually stop?

This is likely an adjustment period that some people experience -- give it 3-4 weeks and most likely it will improve.  With a TSH of 10, treatment is indicated.  Some do better with one brand over another for reasons that are unclear -- they all have the same active levothyroxine ingredient.

Hi,

I have also just started on Synthroid and notice a similiar "drugged out" feeling about 1 hour after taking the new med. Then I stabilize and feel pretty normal for a few hours, then can feel it starting to wear off in the evening. Do you get this too? So many things were happening in my body prior to starting the Synthroid- it's driving me crazy trying to decipher symptoms and figure out if they're from the hypothyroid itself or the medicine.
