Lab work question

by jess74, Jan 03, 2008 08:33AM
Hello,
About 2 months ago my hair dresser realized 2 bald spots when doing my hair. I went to a dermotologist who diagnosed me with Alopecia Areata. Since then I have been receiving cortizone shots to stimulate the hair growth, but now two spots turned into about 7 spots. She recently took my blood again and my Free T4 is 0.8 and my TSH 3rd Generation is 0.41. Does this validate as hypo? I'm 33 yrs old have 2 children weight about 140lbs. I have been trying to loose 10 pounds and its been a little harder these days but I attributed it to being older...I appreciate your help. thanks

This is not likely hypothyroidism. The labs are normal and the low-normal Free T4 should not be considered an indication of a slightly low thyroid - it's part of the normal range.  The TSH of 0.41 suggests normal thyroid function.  If the T4 and T3 were clearly below normal then hypothyroidism would be considered.
