Levoxyl or Levothyroixin Problems?

by dinahbk, Jul 14, 2007 12:00AM
I have been taking Armour Thyroid for several years for Hypothyroidism. My symptoms have not gone away. Hair loss has increased, a little libido has returned, but not much, weight gain has stabilized within 5 pounds, cold feet and hands still, energy levels fairly improved, anxiety somewhat improved. Due to the hair loss, weight issues and cold feet/hands, I thought I'd check out a new doc. Dr. Arem. He wrote THE THYROID SOLUTION.He rx'd me a combo of armour and levoxyl. I mistakenly rec'd a generic of levoxyl from my pharmacy. My libido seems to be increasing a little more, my hair loss seems to be improving a little bit, but I'm gaining weight fast. Already about 3 pounds in a month and I was already struggling to lose about 8. Suggestions? Could it be the switch in rx? The dose? Please help. The weight gain is really scaring me.

Sometimes thyroid hormone treatment can increase appetite.  Would be worth checking levles to make sure dose is ok - also best to not be on generic, but doubt this would cause weight gain unless the levels are way off.

How is your life style? Do you exercise cardio 5 times a week 30-45 minutes each time? Do you live an active lifestyle? How is your blood work? T4? TSH? T3? Free T4, Free T3 etc? These lab results are important to know in order to even change dosage. Some people are on a combo of T4 meds and Armour. Maybe you are not taking enough of levothyroxine and Armour. Maybe a blood work can suggest that you could take more. It is important to understand that we can live a pretty healthy life with hypothyroidism but perhaps not as healthy one as a person who has a healthy thyroid. Mental health, lifestyle, diet, exercise, stress reduction are all important part of feeling better. I am not sure if the switching of meds is gaining you weight.... Probably not.... It is good to find out if you are on the correct dose or not... Have you been tested for Hashimotos? Hashimotos indicate antibodies and even with normal blood work and enough dose we can still have symptoms because we have the autoimmune disease. I hope you will continue to improve and feel better.
