Link between under treated thyroid and vitiligo

by ruthers, Aug 22, 2009 02:41PM
Three months ago my thyroxin was cut (without consutation) from 250 mcg's to 150 mcg's as my T4 was 28, TSH was low but not told how low.  After four to six weeks vitiligo on my hands and feet began and spread very rapidly.  Thanks to anther Doctor my Thyroxin has been put to 200mcg and although not feeling fully well am better than I was but, the vitliligo continues to spread, could there be a connection between the under treated thyroid and the vitiligo.

The underactive thyroid is likely due to Hashimoto's - this is an autoimmune disease as is vitiligo.  About 1-2% of Hashi patients have vitiligo, but it is not commonly thought to get worse when the thyroid is under-treated in most cases.
