Multinodular Thyroid

UpDate..!! Yesterday, I saw the Endocrinologist and she told me that back in 2003, when I did the first ultrasound I had a small nodule on the left side of my thyroid. This last ultrasound that I did now in April, 2007 it showed that same nodule got slightly bigger, it went from 7cm to 15cm!! She told me to start taking Synthroid 0.25mg the lowest dosage to see if it "shrinks" the nodules. I have to take that for 2 months and then go and do some bloodwork to see the TSH results. If they haven't shrunk, then I will have to do another "ultrasound", as she stated!! Then she sees where to go from there!! I asked her, if my smoking had anything to do with that, she stated there has been no known cancer related diagnosis. Will this medication actually shrink the nodules on my thyroid?? She did diagnose it as a "Multinodular Thyroid"!! She did advise me to stop smoking, which I will be doing anyway, even though it has no relation to my thyroid being enlarged! She stated also, that I don't have "HYPOTHYROIDISM or HYPERTHYROIDISM" the Synthroid is just to shrink the nodules!! She says, if I experience symptoms such as: heart palpatations or being to hyper to let her know, so she can stop the medication! Well, let's see what happens!! Thank-you

This is not unreasonable, but the new ATA guidelines on nodules say to FNA and not 'suppress' nodules with Synthroid type meds in this type of case.
