Multinodular goiter growth, pregnancy, TSH ok

by kp2006, Oct 04, 2006 12:00AM
I am a 28 year old female, 10 weeks pregnant with my second child.  When I was 8 I grew a thyroid goiter and had the right lobe removed.  It was diagnosed as benign hyperplasia.  I have been on Synthroid (most recent dose of .175) to suppress my thryoid from function so I will not grow a goiter.  However, in 2003 before the birth of my child my thyroid started to grow again and I had an ultrasound done.  No biopsy - as it appeared to still be benign hyperplasia.  My endo. tries to keep me between .3 and .9 on my TSH to limit the growth.  However from March 2006 to Sept. 2006 my thyroid grew again almost doubled in size.  I had another ultrasound done and a TSH.  Ultrasound shows that my thyroid has grown since 2003, and TSH was .845 in the doc.'s limit so he will not increase my dose because he does not want me to go hyperthyroid and harm the baby.  However, the lump in my neck proves my thyroid is growing despite being in his range.  Will it stop growing after pregnancy?  Or do I need to be monitored more frequently? (he will not see me again till Dec.)  I don't want to have the other half of my thyroid removed eventually since I think this growth can be controlled and was controlled for almost 20 years?

Is there a nodule in the L lobe -- if so, may need biopsy which can usually wait until after pregnancy.

There is a tendency for goiter during pregnancy, so there is a good chance that it will improve after pregnancy with continuing suppression.

The TSH during pregnancy can likely be as low as 0.3 without much worry....so if the goiter growth continues, the dose may need to be increased.
