No left lobe/enlarged right lobe with nodule

by itsthelittlethings, Aug 09, 2009 01:14PM
The doctor sent me for an ultrasound bc I had pain/discomfort on the right side of my neck.  It revealed an enlarged right lobe and a nodule - there is no left lobe (I never had surgery on my thyroid)  I had a normal TSH and a normal T3 and T4
Should I be asking for more thyroid bloodwork?  (Like free T3 and T4, etc.) or does the TSH tell what needs to be told?
Is it possible to have a normally functioning thyroid with half missing and the other half enlarged?

absence of one lobe (hemi-agenesis) occurs in about 1 in 2000 people and it is usually the left lobe.  Most of these patients have normal thyroid function -- as you do.  No additional blood tests are needed but the nodule on the right may need FNA biopsy depending on its size and characteristics.
