Pituitary Gland

by MoThompson, Oct 16, 2009 01:57PM
I recently had labs done and my Freet4 and TSH came back low.  They were low in June also.  The P.A. has me scheduled for an MRI on my Pituitary Gland.  After doing research, the only thing I found that would make the gland malfunction is a tumor.  Are there others reasons why my gland isn't working?
Also, I had an ultrasound done on my nodules..still have 3 of them even after having RAI treatment 2 years ago, is this normal?  I was told they should "disappear". I used to have 6 so some of them did disappear.  I had a biopsy done 7 years ago which came back inconclusive. Should I get another biopsy done?

They do not usually completely disappear after RAI -- they do usually shrink.  If one has enlarged or changed in character, then FNA biopsy should be considered.

If you are on thyroid meds with T3, then the T4 and TSH may be low due to meds.  It is rare to have a pituitary problem, but an MRI will help exclude a tumor/adenoma.  Would consider an endocrine consult in this setting for a thorough evaluation.
