Problems with removal of thyroid after eight months

by jd518, Jun 17, 2007 12:00AM
I developed Hashimoto's after my daughter was born, but i have been borderline hypothyroidism since I was 9 or 10 yrs old. But eventually my goiter got bigger and bigger and they couldn't get my levels right.  So I had a complete thyroidectomy in October of 2006.  Since then my calcium has gone up and down my thyroid is still not in control, I'm still very fatigued and then just started noticing about 2 months ago joint tightness in my achilles tendon and calves to where it is very hard to walk and stretch them.  Is there any end to all of this or some kind of relief soon?

Low calcium after total thyroidectomy (aka post-surgical hypoparathyroidism) is difficult to treat.  Use of potent vitamin D such as rocaltrol (most common) or ergocalciferol along with large doses of calcium can be helpful -- it is important not to take the thyroid med along with calcium meds, so this gets difficult.  So the thyroid med is taken first thing upon awakening and the calcium starts about an hour or so later after breakfast -- some patients do okay taking calcium with lunch and dinner but most in this situation will need it three times a day....

At 15 I had my thyroid removed due to a goiter. I lost weight following my surgery, but through the years, the weight has come on, and been harder to lose it. Now at 53, I am about 80 lbs overweight, tired all the time, sliggish, headaches, and nothing helps take the weight off. I am on meds, which are supposed to replace what I need from lack of a thyroid. Is my weight and fatigue always going to be an issue for me, and what can I do to help myself overcome this issue of overweight and being tired all the time?
