Pseudo Nodule

by adramafreezone, Jun 30, 2009 05:15PM
I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis in 2007.  In april 2009 I had a physical exam of my thyroid and the doctor thought she felt a small nodule.  The results from my ultrasound came shortly after and noted there were no nodules but I do have hyperemeia of the thyroid.  I recently went for another visit and the doctor pulled up the actual ultrasound on the computer and pointed out a 'nodule', which I guess she had already discussed with an associate, and they came to the decision that it is only a pseudo-nodule and that is why it was not listed on the report.  She felt my thyroid and this time she felt nothing..she said the pseudo nodule was well within my thyroid.   She said that we will just watch it and follow up in a year with another ultrasound.  How can they be so sure without a fine needle aspiration that it is indeed a pseudo-nodule?  The doctor said herself that I was at an increased risk of thyroid cancer due to the Hashimoto's, I don't understand why I should be waiting an entire year to see if there are any changes to the so called pseudo nodule.  May I ask your opinion on this?

Hashimoto's commonly shows pseudonodules.  If there is doubt, FNA biopsy can be done, but the ultrasound appearance is a good predictor of the area being a pseudonodule rather than a true nodule.  Ultrasound is also much better than palpation at evaluating for nodules.  You may wish to request 6 month follow-up for peace of mind if you desire.
