RAI and scan

by coleman9504, Jul 17, 2007 12:00AM
I am preparing for my RAI this week.
Monday and Tuesday I am doing the thyrogen shots.
Wed RAI
Friday a blood test.

The nurse told me no scan is necessary.
Isn't the purpose of the RAI to determine if the thyroid cells and spread beyond the thyroid and to take care of the remaining thryoid cells.

Why would I not have a scan? Is that normal protocol?
I need to know if it has spread elsewhere.

Thank you

If you are getting I-131, there should be a scan.  This is true for treatment I-131 and for diagnostic follow-up I-131.  Granted, the thyroglobulin blood test on Friday is the most helpful test usually, but if you are getting RAI (I-131) on Wed, you should have a scan on the Friday for the normal diagnostic follow-up protocol.
