RAI for bodyscan and pregnancy

by hawkfan, Jan 15, 2007 12:00AM
Last April I had RAI for thyroid cancer.  Now I have to have a small dose of RAI for a body scan.  I have to do this every 6 months to check for the return of cancer, because I have antibodies that prevent blood tests to monitor this.  My question is what are the general guidelines for becoming pregnant after the lower dose of RAI? My husband and I are thinking of having another baby, but obviously this RAI for the body scan puts a hitch into our plans?  Do I have to wait the 5 years until all of this testing is done to try to conceive again or because it is a lower dose are there different rules?  What are the rules for RAI (at any dose) and conception?

The newer guidelines for thyroid cancer suggest less I-131 scanning -- in my low risk patients (ie, no documented persistent cancer) we may scan once at 6-12 months post the RAI treatment but then simply follow Tg levels (unless the blood test for Tg-Ab is positive) and annual neck ultrasound).  Pregnancy is not advised for at least six months after I-131 (likely at any dose).
