Radioactive Scan and Pregnancy

by ski409, Jun 15, 2009 12:13PM
I am scheduled to have a radioactive scan done on my thyroid this week.  My husband and I are currently trying to conceive.  If there is any possiblity (it's too early to tell) that I am pregnant, is there a risk to the embyro having this test done?  I am only 3 days past ovulation and the scan is scheduled for this week.

Would ask the indication for the scan -- if it is to evaluate a nodule and your TSH is normal then would cancel the scan as it is not necessary anyway.  If it is to evaluate a low TSH (hyperthyroidism) then it is likely useful.  Furthermore, if there is a thyroid function problem, this may need to be addressed before trying to conceive.  There is little risk in this situation, but it may be that the scan is not needed or could be delayed until you confirm you are not pregnant.
