Should I be taking Thyroxine?

by Ang34audi, Jul 23, 2007 12:00AM
Hi

Could some body please tell me if I should be taking Thyroxine?
a few yrs ago I had Graves disease which I have been in remission for for a 1 1/2 yrs.
Last August I started to fell really tired, head fog, bad memory, loss of libedo, depression & anxiety, dizzy spells, hair loss, dry skin all the usual symptoms! and tests were run.
All tests came back as NORMAL?? and all Docs want to give me anti depressants.
I have just been to see a Dr Skinner ( a thyroid specialists ) armed with my lab results which are as follows.

FT4 11.8 pmo/l  TSH 0.3 miu/l no T3 tests done although the last results  on 21/6/07 were 5.2pmo/l
body temp 35.5

I have been given Thyroxine starting @ 25ug per day for first wk then 50ug then being raised 25ug every 4 weeks till im up to 100.

With a low TSH you would have thought my diagnosis would have been hyper rather then hypo? (have no hyper symptoms and I know what they are as I was severly hyper!  T3 23 / T4 30.9 / TSH 0.5)

Dr Skinner is experienced in solving Thyroid problems and is not afraid to treat the clinical symptoms rather then just going on blood tests so am going to continue  with medication, just a bit confused.......Please any advice would be welcome.

Thanks

the labs do not point towards a need for thyroxine.  Unless the reference range for your lab suggest the T4 and T3 are low (ie, the rare pituitary hypothyroidism), with a lowish TSH of 0.3, thyroxine is not recommended and may make you hyperthyroid.

The symptoms of hypothyroidism you list are suggestive of thyroid disease, but are not specific to thyroid disease.
