TSH 30, FT4 0.3 hair loss and no other symptoms

by irmara, Jul 31, 2007 12:00AM
During the last 3-4 weeks I was losing my hairs. For this reason, I visited a dermatologist who gave me some treatment and sent for a blood test. The results arrived when the dermatologist and my doctor were on holidays. For this reason, I really appreciate your opinion (see the results below) on the followings:
1. I suppose that I have a hypothyroidism. Why the results are stable during the last 7 months without any pills?
2. The high level of APL (and normal tests of liver) means a disease on the bones? Or is caused by the hypothyroidism?
3. Do you think that I have to follow the hair loss treatment given by the dermatologist (given before knowing the blood results)?
Thanks for your answer

RESULTS and further information
I am a women, 57 years old, 62 kg (stable during the last years) 1.63 m. Good health. No children (despite many years under hormones treatments in the 70s and 80s). No other hypothyroidism symptoms (only hairs loss).
TSH 30, FT 0.30 (in January I had the same results, my doctor asked me to repeat the exams (she was thinking that were wrong results); I did not repeat them because I traveled abroad some days after).   APL (alkaline phosphates) 156 U/L
Other results ok, (AST, and other liver tests OK); only cholesterol high (280, normal for me during the last 20 years)

Would treat the hypothyroidism.  Some patients will have consistent labs like this, and the repeat panel clearly indicating hypothyroidism confirms the diagnosis.

The cholesterol is likely due to hypothyroid and I would think the hair loss as well.  The AP enzyme may be due to hypothyroid as well -- would repeat cholesterol and liver panel about 2-3 months after correcting hypothyroidism.

Less meds are better -- so would wait on the hair treatment as well, recognizing that it may take 2-4 months to notice a change when correcting the long-standing hypothyroidism.

You likely have Hashimoto's, so to complete the evaluation, would check TPO antibody.

Based on your weight, age and health, a 100mcg levothyroxine start dose would be appropriate.

rogaine is a good stuff for hair loss treatment but it works at its full capacity only in case of you're using it  together with technique presented on http://www.save-your-hair.com

Hello I have been on Synthroid for about a year, 100 mcg, I had hair loss before I was diagnosed and when I needed to decrease my medication, both times my hair stopped falling out.  The last couple of weeks the same thing is happening and I was retested, my numbers are normal. I am using rogaine and taking vitamins, but am very concerned and don't know what to try next. thank you

Thyroid disease is only one of many reasons for hair loss.  The most common reason is stress -- vitamins and rogaine can help with this.....
