TSH 85 and 10 week pregnent

by soonmom2b, Jun 27, 2007 12:00AM
I am 10 weeks pregnent with second baby and today my thyroid lab results [tsh] came out to be very high [85.4]. I had postpartum thyroid problem after first delivery which got back normal in 6 months. Now I am very concerned due to high TSH. Is this condition treatable and are the medication safe to take during pregnancy? Also we are worried about the fetus development. Do you think their is any risk? Thanks.

You need to be on synthroid (or a similar med) as soon as possible with a starting dose to be determined by an endocrinologist or OBGYN but definitely not less than 100mcg/day (a current study on this starts women at 150mcg).  This is safe during pregnancy.

There is an increased risk of miscarriage, pre-term labor, high birth weight and some evidence of neurologic (eg IQ) development problems.  But starting meds now can result in a normal pregnancy.

Also, with the history of postpartum thyroiditis, and the current hypothyroidism you likely have hashimotos and will be on synthroid (or a similar med) long-term.

You MUST take medication as you are risking your baby's and your own health. An 84 TSH is incredibly high. Like a diabetic having her sugar levels 600!!!! Your TSH should be around 1!!!!! I think you should ensure that you get treated firts so you can later carry out a healthy baby. I have no idea how you got pregnant with such a high TSH number. I wonder if you have antibodies? I wish you good luck and even better health!

Thanks for the comments. I saw a doctor the next day and was put on medication [synthroid 150mcg]. After 3 wks of treatment,  I got my lab results done. Now TSH is around 2, FreeT4 is normal too BUT TPO is way high around 3400 [normal range is 0 to 60]. Not sure what is the implication of high TPO. I will be following up with the doctor soon. I hope high TPO doesn't affect the baby.
