TSH IS STILL HIGH BUT T4 IS NOW NORMAL-ANY SUGGESTIONS?TNT406

MY WIFE JUST GOT BACK HER NEW THYROID BLOODWORK AND SINCE GOING ON MEDICATION HER TSH HAS COME DOWN FROM 246 TO 59 AND HER T4 HAS GONE BACK IN TO THE NORMAL RANGE FROM .3 TO 1.0. SHE FEELS SOMEWHAT BETTER BUT NEEDS TO KNOW WHEN SHE WILL BE FEELING NORMAL. SHE SEES HER DOCTOR ON FRIDAY AND SEE WHAT SHE SAYS. SHE IS CURRENTLY ON SYNTHROID AT .75. ANY COMMENTS ARE REQUESTED. I DON'T BELEIVE THAT HER TSH WILL EVER BE IN THE NORMAL RANGE BUT HER T4 WILL PROBABLY GET A LITTLE HIGHER!?!? IT NOW HAS BEEN 5 WEEKS SINCE SHE HAS BEEN DIAGNOISED.

Hi Ken I know that once starting on thyroid medicine,it takes a while for it to really start regulating in the body.It might have to be adjusted quite a bit all so until the doctor is happy with the dosage and your wife is really showing great improvement.You could start your own journal of your wife or if you didn't feel comfortable doing that ask your wife if she would like to make a journal.How she is feeling,have her wiegh her self every two weeks and put that in her journal all so.Have her write down her enregy level if it is up or still down,and write the date each time she makes an entry in her journal.She could all so take this in to her doctor,or ask her doctor Friday about doing a journal,and see what her doctor thinks.This my first time with trying to help some one on the thyroid forum I hope I am helping you and your wife.There are a lot of ways to learn about the thyroid level.You could probably type in thyroid level on your computer and it would take you to a web page.That is how I've been doing my research on the thyroid.I didn't know your wife had just been diagnosed 5 weeks ago.So you both are still learning like I am,we all will learn together.It is good to have friends to learn something new with,and this is some thing we all can benefit from.Does your wife seem to have more energy now?I will try to do research for both of us.All so ask your doctor if she has some pamplets on thyroid disorders,maybe that could help your wife understand her condition.All so ask her about what the thyroid levels should be.May be she could write out what your wifes levels should be that way you and her will know.I hope I have helped.If not tell me and I will work on it.GOD BLESS YOU KEN AND YOUR LOVING WIFE.Becky

THANKS FOR YOUR THOUGHTS. I APPRECIATE YOUR THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS FOR MY WIFE. HER ENERGY LEVEL IS STILL VERY LOW. EVERYTHING ELSE SEEMS TO BE DOING BETTER THOUGH. HER WEIGHT CAME OFF AND SHE ISN'T BLOATED ANYMORE AND THAT IS GOOD. SHE STILL DOESN'T HAVE MUCH OF AN APPETITE. HOPEFULLY THE DOCTOR WILL GET HER ALL FIXED UP SOON. :):)

It can take 6-8 weeks but sometimes even longer if they have to keep adjusting her dosage.  Tell her to hang in there.  It can be a long and frustrating process but she should start feeling better in a few weeks.  The synthroid has to build up in the blood stream, that's what takes so long.  There is some good info on Mary Shomon's page on about.com and some more in depth info. at www.nih.gov.  You can use NIH's Medline to search for synthroid and it will give you more details about the drug itself.
