TSH test result become normal

by antopete2, Jul 17, 2009 12:53PM
Hello Doctor,

The test for TSH for my new born son was conducted yesterday. The results are given below. Your answer to my question was to let you know this month result. The level's seem to be normal. The medication was L-Thyroxine. The practitioner asked us to continue with the lower does of same tablet. My question to you is a)Should we continue giving him this tablet even if it reaches to the ground level of normal range. b)If so how long & why. c) Will TSH cause an adverse effect on our son. Please advice.

The intial tests showed a high TSH indicating hypothyroidism.  Depending on how soon after delivery this was done, the normal T4 & T3 may have been mom's thyroid hormones crossing placenta with the high TSH indicating that there is not adequate levels of thyroid hormone on average.  The high TSH itself will not hurt your son, but is a reflection that the thyroid is underactive - which could hurt him.  Levothyroxine is usually a lifelong treatment.  Would ask the doctor why the thyroid is underactive, but congenital hypothyroidism  often does not have a clear explanation and occurs 1 in every 3000-4000 births.
