Thyroid - Vitamin D

by karenscar, Feb 05, 2008 12:16PM
Hi Dr. Lupo.  I emailed you a couple of weeks ago about my Vitamin D status.  I am hypothyroid and was taking 100 mcg of Synthroid, with a TSH of 2.33.  My Vitamin D was tested and was just a 9.  Other blood work was normal.  I was started on Vitamin D, and after 6 weeks my level is now 55.  However, I began to not feel well and felt hypothyroid symptoms.  I had my TSH checked, and it is now 4.97.  My questions are:  1)  I think that I now need an increase in Synthroid, do you agree?  2)  Do I now stop the Vitamin D, since my levels are now normal.  and 3) Do you have any idea why the Vitamin D would have affected my TSH?  Thanks for your consideration.

We usually continue the vitamin D but at a lower dose -- talk to your doc about options.

The TSH is a little high, suggesting more synthroid is needed.

Did you have celiac sprue antibodies tested?  It's a cause of low vit D

Vit D itself is not known to change thyroid levels, but it's a possibility.
