Thyroid Problems!!

by Coco40, May 23, 2007 12:00AM
over the past 2 years I have developed symptoms that have alarmed me.First I started losing alot of hair and over a 1 year period I had gained 10 pounds. I felt tired  but more than that I had lost the energy to do things I used to do regularly like yard work and gardening, even just cleaning around the house.I found myself distracted easily and forgetful which was unlike me. I also was depressed which I've had issues with over the years. I went to my GP who did do a thyroid test. He said that everything came back in the low but normal range.Depressed even more I went home and thought I would have to deal with the hair loss and maybe start vitamins. Now since that visit I also have had problems with my nails lifting from their beds and at different times over the past year have lost 3 nails. They do grow back but it's an annoyance. I also have lost about 25-30% of my hair. The texture has changed and even my hairdresser has noticed it. From research I know these are symptoms. After additional research I now know I have even more symptoms like cold hands and feet that tingle, No tolenrance of the cold, heavy muenstral periods, and weight gain specifically in my waist like a tire.  I'm so afraid the test results will be the same .They will come back normal/low and I'll be sent on my way. Some symptoms you can live with but all this hair loss !! What do I do if it's normal again? Also, just something that may be worth mentioning, my Mother,61years old, has Lupus.

With your symptoms, the 'low-normal' labs and mom's history of auto-immune disease - my guess is you have hashimotos.  Would document this with thyroid antibodies.  I typically treat when TSH is >3 in these cases.

My mom's age is 65 years old and diagnosed with TSH 7.05 june 2006 and has been given treatment for this.
I have been diagnosed with high blood sugar 138/230 mg/DL
She have been diagnosed with high cholestrol 230 and has high blood pressure150/80 after this high TSH.
Do you  think
I should check her TSH again and should I start sugar/Cholestrol treatment.

Please advice.

Thanks
