Thyroid Question

by Shanoonee, Sep 20, 2007 02:56PM
I am a 27 yr old female.  I went to the doctor the other day for my foot, and he noticed a mass on my thyroid.  He order blood work and an ultra sound.  I have yet to be scheduled for the ulta sound, but the blood work has come back normal.  I can't seem to find anything online about 'normal' blood work and thyroid masses.  Just curious if anyone could help point me in the right direction, or if anyone knew what could be going on with my body.  Thanks!

Most people with thyroid masses have normal labs.

Most thyroid masses (90-95%) are benign.

However depending on the ultrasound findings, a biopsy may be needed.  If the labs are normal and there is a nodule on ultrasound, the next step is biopsy NOT an I-123 nuclear scan (but unfortunately this test is over-ordered in these situation).
