Thyroid crazy tests! So frustrurated!

by sibahan, Sep 23, 2008 02:05PM
I had a blood test done in July-- this showed i had underactive thyroid.
I had an ultrasound done this showed nodules and underactive thyroid with slightly enlarged thyroid
Then, I had a thyroid uptake scan done, which showed an overactive thyroid (only very slightly the doc says)
in order to get me some synthroid, and on the right track---my doctor
Then had me take a blood test yesterday which supposedly shows NORMAL thyroid function, but my menstural period is now, 8 days late and i am NOT pregnant.
Any suggestions?
I cant get a doc appt with an endrocronologist until the end of december, and i am TIRED of feeling like this! I have every symptom of thyroid disease, and was treated years ago for UNDERACTIVE thyroid....but it seems to keep changing!!

The scan does not tell hyper vs hypo -- only what the uptake shows (which is often increased in hypothyroidism).  So the scan does not add much except to suggest that the thyroid may have been recovering from a transient thyroiditis -- ie mild/moderate hyperthryoidism, followed by hypothyroidism followed by recovery.  This can be associated with an enlarged thyroid.

Normal TSH is 0.3-3.0 -- check to see if it is really normal -- if so, would not recommend thyroid medication (unless definetely indicated) as these are often lifelong...

Given the history though, this is likely autoimmune thyroid disease -- would test antibodies (TPO & Tg) -- if positive, then more compeeling to treat.
