Thyroid medication

by Alisa W, Apr 06, 2006 12:00AM
I have a couple questions about levothyroxine. My dosage is 137 mcg. I was having so many heart flutters and noticed that when I stopped taking my thyroid they got much less noticeable. Since they scared me rather badly I stopped the thyroid medication.
I have taken it off and on at half dose over the last couple of months. Is it okay to start it back up at the full dose, or should I take half a pill for a bit to build back up to the full dosage?
Also, the pharmacy has been changing me from synthroid to levoxyl and the latest is now levothyroxine. Is there a problem with switching those back and forth? I did have a holter monitor for the heart flutters and they were found to be PVCs (in range of 800 a day)and were diagnosed as benign. Since I am no longer scared of them I realize I need to be back on my medication for my thyroid. I know this was a really stupid thing to do and I would rather not have to discuss it with my PCP if possible. I have a blood draw for my thyroid levels scheduled in one month as part of my yearly exam.
I appreciate your time in answering my question.
Thanks so much,
Alisa

Did the palpitations get better without synthroid?  If so you may need a lower dose than 137mcg.  Would stick to one brand and not switch around.  Consider taking 1/2 pill for a week then going to one pill a day and see how things go.  Make sure to do the blood draw in a month but to be safe repeat again in three months to make sure the dose is okay.

I meant to say that my levels were holding in a steady normal range at the 137 mcg.  So it is not that my levels were to high and causing the heart flutter.
