Thyroid testing during pregnancy

by iae.04, Nov 14, 2005 12:00AM
I was diagnosed with Subclinical Hypothyroidism a couple of months ago by a fluke.  I had no symptoms that I was aware of.   TSH was about 8, T4 was in normal range.  Doctor put me on Levothyroxine to get me euthyroid before becoming pregnant.  I took a blood test two weeks ago at just 4 weeks pregnant and although TSH was still within normal range, it was creaping up (was 4.83).  The doctor kept me on my same dosage and said I should retest in 6 weeks.  I know pregnancy often causes an increase in TSH and my concern is that I probably tested too early to really allow it to show any increase.  I know that these first 10 weeks are most critical for the baby in regard to thyroid problems.  Should I insist on retesting now (I'm now 6 weeks pregnant) or should I just relax and not worry about it.  How often do you think I should test throughout the rest of the pregnancy?  (By the way, my current dosage is very low-  .05 mg)

Goal TSH esp during pregnancy is 0.5-2.0.  Would increase the dose to 75mcg now and recheck in 6 weeks.
