a contradiction in symptoms . what to do ?

by harajukukitten, May 31, 2007 12:00AM
Ive recently done some research here online reguarding my health and have basically concluded that i may have a thyroid condition .
ive got most of the classic symptoms .  overall fatigue and muscle soreness or muscular failure .  i may sweat from nervousness but not when exercising or in hot weather .  complete intolerance to cold weather . even when its not actually cold at all .  dry skin especially heavily calloused hands . my hair has become dry and brittle and sparse due to heavy shedding . fingernails have grown thin and peel or break easily .  complete lack of sex drive . terrible depression despite a seemingly happy lifestyle . somewehat of a swelling and firmness in the throat .  loss of vision . a feeling of confusion or stupidity resulting in short term memory loss and lack of concentration.   and many more the list goes on .  however one symptom that contradicts all of this is that when this all started i lost 25 pounds . and i cant gain it back .
the previous symptoms from what i read point to HYPOthyroidism
but the losing of weight points to HYPERthyroidism . how is it that i would have all the symptoms of one disease  except for the one that most people tell me is most relevant ? is it possible to have both ?  needless to say im clueless on the issue and my physical or emotional state only makes me more reluctant to seee a doctor because i fear what they will tell me .   can anyone sort this one out ?  id really appreciate the help .

You cannot have both at the same time and it is rare to fluctuate between the two rapidly.  If the labs are normal for thyroid then there is likely something else going on.  The problem with all the common symptoms is that they are  NOT specific to the thyroid -- in other words, many other potential causes.

a folow up on my question after reading previous posts .

ive always been thin .. mom is thin . dad is thin .  but since these symptoms started four years ago  my appetitie has increased .yet no weight gain is achieved reguardless of what i eat . in fact despite my hunger actually sitting down to eat is very uncomfortable and has resulted in eating less often and in smaller amounts ..  im also always thristy . but no matter how much i drink i will only urinate shortly after and remain dehydrated. once again a doctor would likely fix this issue . but with the contradictions of symptoms i fear getting caught up in the medical runaround

You need to see a doctor.  I understand getting caught up in a medical runaround, but some of your symptoms suggest diabetes and can be very serious if ignored.  Wouldn't it be better to know what is wrong than worry?  Maybe you do have a thyroid problem, but if you do nothing, then nothing changes.........think about it!

You definitely need to see a doctor....just so you know, for the last 3 months my thyroid has been very underactive with a TSH of 18 and I lost 25 pounds...I thought this was odd given that most people with hypothyroidism gain weight...my doctor said that a small percentage of people do lose weight when they are underactive...and I too am having problems gaining it back....good luck....debbie

Fear of medical runaround aside, get yourself to the dr.  Today.  Now.  Do it.  I'd suggest getting your blood sugar tested, as well as being tested for vitamin/mineral deficiencies.  The constant thirst and frequent urination is a big indicator of a problem.

Please keep us posted. :)

   Hello, harajukukitten

As I understand it your thyroid can be over stimulated (Hyper) for so long and then take a nose dive into Low (Hypo) thyroid.  Like some that can drink coffee at 4 pm and can't sleep till after midnight. After your reserves are depleted you will turn eventually hypo and you can drink coffee 10 minites before you go to sleep. (No reserves left to stymulate)  This is just a suggestion of how some people can deplete there adrenals and may not apply to you.
How ever I do have some much more concrete information on thyroid treatment than that.  First google Lugols Iodine, or Iodine thyroid and check out Iodine for both hyper and hypo there.
Also you could read up a little and get a Iodine loading test per this site:
http://www.iodine4health.com/ortho/ortho.htm

Also research info at:
http://iodine4health.com/overviews/uses/potter_uses.htm

Also check out coconut oil, this will also help thyroid both ways to some degree.

I am in the camp that believes in my own research much much more than the agenda driven medical proffestion.
