confused about hormone levels

by nicobella, Aug 15, 2005 12:00AM
HI all..me again. I am just so confused about qll these hormone levels and everything. I do searching on the internet and get conflicting opinions. Some websites say that lower tsh levels indicate hyperthyroid and the higher the number = hypo. However..other sites say just the oposite. How can this be. FOr example...my blood tests when i was diagnosed with hyper say that my tsh was high.....and now it is low. It has progressively gone down while i was on the tapazole. Then when it got to 2.0 the doctor said i was heading towards hypo and to go off it all together. ?? So confusing. Also....will my hormone levels come back into the "norm" range now that i am off the tapazole or will they just stay there--close to being hypo?? Should i be on thyroid hormones to raise the levels back up??
Thanks

Hi again Nicobella,
I understand your confusion, I bet most of us went through that too, before we got more research under out belts. What you are probably seeing is references to TSH at times and other times they are talking about one of the actual thyroid hormones (T-3 or T-4) but they'll switch subjects during a paragraph and you think they are still talking about the opposite one they started out with.
TSH is a pituitary hormone that nudges the thyroid to make more T-4 & T-3 or it backs off of sending the hormone to signal the thyroid to make more t-4 and t-3, if there is already enough or even too much already being released.
So, TSH the pituitary(Thyroid Stimulating Hormone), is elevated above normal, when you are HYPOthyroid and it is decreased below normal when you are HYPERthyroid. With the actual thyroid homones, T-3 & T-4, it is just the opposite, these are elevated when you are hyperthyroid and they are low when you are hypothyroid.
I'm sorry they are having a little problem getting you regulated but with time and repeat blood testing, they should get you in good range soon.

Showard, I don't know why I didn't think to list the range for TSH again, but it is "0.3 to 3.0" however, most labs still use the old range of "0.5 to 5.0".
