enlarged thyroid with "normal TSH"

by bribeauty25, Nov 03, 2009 01:18PM
Hello, I am a 29 year old female.  During a physical for a new job the doctor told me the left side of my thyroid is enlarged and to have my family doctor check it out.  My family doctor did not even look at or feel my neck, but took blood to check my thyroid. I have been experiencing symptoms like constipation followed by bad stomach aches and diarrhea, a tingling tongue, horiffic menstral periods, fatigue, mood swings, and just overall do not feel normal.  Have been previously diagnosed as depressed and have frequent migranes. I have never felt 100% confident my doctor is very thorough, and now don't at all.  I was told my blood work is normal when I called to check after a week of not hearing anything.  My blood sugar was 63, and my TSH was 1.14 that is all I know.  I have a family history of thyroid disease and lymphoma.  I am very worried and feel something is not right.  My doctor feels unconcerned and has not told me anything.

The normal tests does not tell you anything about the "lump" - would ask for a thyroid ultrasound to further evaluate.  The normal TSH means your thyroid levels are normal and the other symptoms are not likely thyroid related.  But if there is a lump, it needs further evaluation.

Hi, I was reading your question and have to tell you I had the same experience. My tests was normal, and my Thyroid was enlarged. The doctors told me I had to make a decision to remove it or not. I decided to remove it, since I had difficulties to swallow. I also had problems with my stomach and inner bleeding s 4 months before the operation. I accuse the Thyroid to cause infections in my body several times, even if the blood test where within the normals.

After the operation 1st of February this year, I started working full time in May. We are still trying to find the correct dose of Levaxin, it takes time and I just went down from 175 Microgram to 150 and got a reaction with fever, infection and no energy at all the last 3 weeks.  Hoping for a normal life soon, seems I still have to find answers myself, the doctors here do not have so much experience with this. I am used to have a lot of energy, and will ask to go back to 175 Micrograms 2  or 3 days a week to be able to function at work.
