gastrointestinal problems and hashimotos

For the past year I have had loose bowels. I have had all the usual tests done- colonoscopy/endoscopy/stool tests- everything came back normal. I just want some feedback from somebody. I read that Hashimoto's usually causes constipation, not loose stools. It seems that when I have the loose stools (lasts a few days or sometimes a few weeks) I also have more thyroid symptoms- not as sharp minded, more anxiety, nausea. The nausea is more like a complete loss of appetite for most of the day and worse in the morning. Just wondering if the appetite loss/nausea is a consequence or less reported symptom of hashi. Thanks.

May not be directly related to thyroid but as a patient with one autoimmune disease (hashi), other autoimmune processes should be considered -- celiac sprue, inflammatory bowel disease, addison's (unlikely).  The scopes would have excluded inflammatory bowel but not necessarily sprue (there are blood tests that can screen for it).  Addison's is an adrenal under-activity that can cause decreased appetite and nausea -- also weight loss and dizziness.  Of course over-treated hashi (ie medication induced hyperthyroidism) can cause loose stools and anxiety......

I have heard that hashimoto's, or hypo thyroid, causes slow digestion, so constipation would indeed make a lot of sense. Before I was diagnosed as hypo, & before being on meds, among some of the awful symptoms i was having one of them was slow digestion & nausea that went with it. I could remember eating in a lavish restaurant & only being able to eat about half my dinner because I had so much indigestion i thought i would faint! Needless to say i blamed the food & promised myself I would not go there again, turned out it was me & not the food. Good luck to you & i hope i helped you some!

Gastroparesis is another term for "slow stomach emtying".  People with hypothyroidism can have this.  The symptoms are, bloating, GERD, fullness upon eating small amouints of food and constipation.  Ask your doctor about this if you have these symptoms.
