hair loss after stopping levoxyl

by Thindy, Sep 05, 2007 09:15AM
Hi Dr. Lupo. 3 months ago i was diagnosed with hashimotos only. The Dr. started me on levoxyl to see if it would help the hair loss. It actually made it worse and my tsh which was 1.42 prior to tx became a .35 after tx. Because ot the lowered tsh and hair loss he has stopped me on my meds. He simply wanted to try tx to see if it would help. My question is if I lost hair due to the medication, will it come back and how long will it take. Thanks!!

It's unclear if the levoxyl (or similar meds like synthroid) cause hair loss in select patients.  Certainly hair loss is part of hypothyroidism and there may be some adjustment period when starting the thyroid med where the hair follicle is effected.  Remember, hair loss lags about 2-3 months behind the event that provokes it.

In most cases of thyroid related hair loss, it grows back -- how long is variable  - -  2-6 months on average.

I have seen a few patients benefit from thyroid meds in situations like yours, others not.  Have also tried selenium 200mcg/day with some sucess in lowering antibodies and improving hair problems.
