iron absorbstion after Total Thyroidectomy

by Alicevs, Nov 15, 2006 12:00AM
Last week I had a total thyroidectomy I had Hashimoto's that produced a huge goiter. Since then my toungue kind of tingles and feels like it has swelled and just doesnt feel right. I was having constipation till today. I produced very black/green stools. I remember from pregnancy this same occurance and they took me off Iron and said I was allergic (?). I have asked my endochronologist yesterday if there was anything I should avoid eating and he said no...but, milk and other calcium food stuffs were bothering me except today they dont seem to anymore. he upped my synthroid to 150mcg yesterday from 125 mcg. This is all so new to me I dont really understand it all. My goiter seemed to me to sprout very quickly and I never knew I had it...I just thought I was getting very fat over this past year.
I have tried to read through the forum and find an answer but, I havent as of yet. all help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Alicevs

Is your calcium level okay? Low calcium is seen in some patients briefly after total thyroid.  That can cause tingling of lips (? and tongue).  Iron can decrease synthroid absorption - so take synthroid first thing in am and iron with dinner (& lunch if 2x/day).

The thyroidectomy itself should not effect iron absorption.

It takes a couple of weeks for the "dust to settle" after total thyroidectomy -- I imagine you will continue to feel better.

Recheck TSH in 6 weeks to make sure 150mcg is ok

Thanks :0...I will wait for the dust to settle then. I was wondering if there was a book I could read or a website that explains all the levels and things I should look for and know about?
Thank You so much, Alicevs
