odd symptoms after surgery

by SarahE86, Nov 03, 2009 12:56PM
I had my thyroid removed in may of this year, a few days after i started noticing tingling and numbness on my arms and hands and fingers. I never had these symptoms before until my surgery. I was wondering if it was at all possible for damage to be done to peripheral nerves or any other nerves besides the voice box.

I have looked up symptoms of damaged nerves and i do have the numbeness, tingling, burning sensations ect. That go with nerve damage. But i cannot get my doctors to listen to me. They've checked me twice a month since the onset of symptoms for ANA and other factors of arthritis and the results are always negative.

Is it odd that these symptoms only started after my thryoid removal? Also, what can it be? I am at my wits end with these symptoms and my doctors about my pain, i also get swelling in the joints of my arms... I am not sure what else to do or what else to look for.

This is likely low calcium due to parathyroid dysfunction after surgery.  Would have calcium tested.

Calcium is normal, vitamin D is normal. B12 is normal. I had my primary doctor check the phosphorus and magnesium levels. To diagnos the parathyroid being low. My levels are normal on that. I forgot which one it is that would be high n which one would be low, but when checked they were in the normal range but at the highest or lowest range.. My Endo blows off my pain symptoms as aging. This is hte only endo in my area.

I am not sure what else they can check other than the peripheral nerves being obstructed in some way. I've had a nerve conduct test done which came out as normal. The neruologist said he cannot help me. The symptoms for peripheral nerve damage are pretty much exactly what i have. Was wondering if seeing a chiropractor would help, perhaps i have a pinch or tight muscles obstructing the nerve at times? Would that explain swelling?
