parathyroid?

by lisacanto, Jun 28, 2007 12:00AM
Hello, I am a 44 year old female.  I have high blood calcium 11.8 and the 24 hour urine test for calicum was 388,7. From what I have been researching it looks as though the parathyroid is the problem.  The endocronoligst just wants to put me on medication to absord the calicum.  I do not think this is taking care of the root of the problem.  I am very tired all the time, have no energy.  I sleep most of the day.  Please give me your opion. I think I need to see someone else for these problems.
thank you,
Lisa

you are right, if you have not had a PTH level, this is required.  If it is >40 (with upper normal of 65), then this is primary hyperparathyroidism.

HCTZ (the med the endo likely had in mind to 'absorb the Ca) is not the right step in these cases as it will further increase blood Ca.

parathyroid and calcium - are connected. have a thyroid pannel test done too to see if you are also hypothyroid. check for TSH, (should be below 2), T4, T3, FreeT4, FreeT3 and thyroid antibodies TPO to see if you have also thyroid problems. I wish you good luck and even better health!
