I have graves disease and I am taking PTU. My husband and I want to have another child. What are the risks involved with taking PTU while pregnant and does PTU pose any problems with getting pregnant.

PTU is the preferred anti-thyroid drug during pregnancy - often the dose can be minimized during pregnancy.  It does cross the placenta so there is a small risk for fetal goiter and hypothyroidism - especially if the dose of PTU is too high -- the goal during pregnancy is to keep the T4 and T3 at the high-normal range.

Other options would be to remove the thyroid, start levothyroxine, then procede with pregnancy OR I-131 then wait 6 months before trying to conceive.

I would usually recommend PTU or surgery in these cases.
