selenium, iodine and Hashimoto's

Hi Dr,
My daughter, a high school senior, has Hashimoto's. She has a little bit enlargement of goiter. Last year, she had normal TSH, but 2 months ago, her TSH was 5.24 (high). Now her result was TSH=2.8 (normal), T4=5.3(low), Free T4=0.74(low),Thyroid peroxide Antibody= >1300(very high), and Thyroglobulin AB= 844(very high). She just start Synthroid 25mcg. After reading Dr's answers from this forum, I'm interested in Selenium supplementation. But many said that Se supplement in people who were deficient in both Se and iodine induces a dramatic fall of thyroid function. Because deficient or excessive iodine can result in hypothyodism, I"m confused to supplement Se with or without iodine. I"m worried about antibodies. Help me.

Your daughter is not likely iodine deficient if she lives in the US and eats a normal US diet.  The selenium has been shown to decrease antibodies.  I think supplementation of 200mcg along with the synthroid treatment is logical in her case.

I have taken the iodine patch test, it soaked in and all color was gone in three hours time. Will it harm me to take Prolamine Iodine Tablets 3 mg with Calcium 20mg?
Thanks!
