thyroid cancer and heredity

I was diagnosed a couple of months ago when my TSH was about 86. After 1 month on synthroid it was down to 2.861. I have no real contact with anyone in my family and have not had a chance to discuss this with a Doctor. My mother had another daughter with another man and I remember when she was a teenager she went on thyroid meds. My Mother's Mother (my Grandmother) died when I was 10 years old in 1965. She had some sort of cancer in the neck area. She had surgery only on the left side of her neck. Is it possible that it was her thyroid?

It is possible. Usually I do an ultrasound in this case -- that will tell if there is any nodule that needs a biopsy.  Would also document thyroid antibodies to confirm Hashimoto's as the most likely cause of your hypothyroidism.
