thyroid causing lip swelling?

Hi there,

I am a 37 yr old healthy female who about 14 months ago started to experience lip swelling, sort of like a hive in the same exact spot every time.

The only changes in my life are that I had a baby 19 months ago, and the lip thing started afterwards.  I went to an allergest who said he did not think it an allergy but he thought it my thyroid.  He ran a thyroid panel that came out normal

My question to you would be, how can the thyroid cause lip swelling?  I asked him but he did not want to talk about why - and I did research but can't find anything.  He was not helpful at all.  The swelling still occurs and he said his thought was not an allergy and did mention anything about coming back in to see him.  I called the office and they said they would have the nurse call me back, its been 2 months and I have called 3times nobody will get back to me.  So im a tad frustrated.

The lip continues to swell, sometimes every day, othertimes just one a week  Same exact spot of the lip and its about the size of a pea - now it appears to be growing larger. I have an epi pen incase my throat swells shut but anyhow if you have any info on what the thyroid can to in connection to lip swellng it would be of great help.  Thanks so much

I don't think it's thyroid -- could test thyroid antibodies -- this being positive may lead credence to the allergist's suggestion of it being thyroid related.  Sounds more like angio-edema and often these cases have no clear-cut cause.  Would seek another allergy opinion and ask to check ANA, CBC, complement levels and thyroid antibodies in addition to whatever other testing she/he may do.

I've never heard of that either but you might try seeing an ENT if you can't get any answers else where.  Good luck, Jean

Thank you guys so much.

I know its just so frustrating. I have read that in these situationso nly 50% of the time to they discover the cause of the swelling.

When I researched lip swelling with thyroid nothing came up.  Thank you both for taking the time to respond.  I wonder if the Dr has ever heard of that?   One advantage I guess I dont need collegen injections? LOL..

Thanks so much :o)
