thyroid cysts

In August I had a 2.5 cm cyst drained on my thyroid.  Recently I started feeling the same catch in my throat.  A repeat u/s showed that the cyst had returned and is now 2 cm.  Why do these cysts return so quickly?  Is it advisable to continue to drain the cyst or discuss removal with a surgeon?

About 60-70% of cysts recur after drainage - this is not uncommon.
Repeat drainage is usually recommended - typically up to 3 times - then surgery if still recurring.  Another option would be percutaneous ethanol injection (PEI) - but this must be done by an expert thyroid specialist -- look at thyroidologists.com and see if there is one near you (and then call the office to see if PEI is offered).
