from an ultrasound I was recently told my thyroid gland is smaller than normal with a possible o virus infection, I can't seem to find any info on this, can yoiu tell me what it is.  I have been taking the same dosage of synthroid for 22 years

You likely have hashimoto's -- immune system attack on the thyroid causing hypothyroidism.  This gives a classic ultrasound appearance of a small, scarred gland.  Not likely a virus - unless you were HYPERthyroid 22 years ago then went hypo and needed synthroid all this time.  (but in that case the virus happened 22 years or more ago and is not a current issue).
