thyroid nodules/surgery

What a great forum you have here.  I'm new to this.  On ultrasound I was found to have an approx 2.5 cm nodule on each side of my thyroid.  TSH, T4 and T3 are normal.  I will have a scan (nuclear medicine) at the hospital on Thurs.  Hoarsness has been my only symptom.  I am female, 62 years old.  If nodules are benign, will I probably need my thyroid removed because of the size of the nodules and the hoarsness I am experiencing.

FNA biopsy is the next step, with a normal TSH the scan is not likely to add any additional useful information but some physicians still like to have the scan done.  The size alone does not merit removal, but if the hoarseness can be tied into the nodules then removal makes sense.  Having a biopsy before surgery is important to help determine the extent of surgery.

Hi I have a 6 yr old son with an immune deficiency. He has had swollen lymph nodes in his neck for almost two years now. The doctors have done tests on him before and his thyroid was normal but now he is hoarse and has been for over a month. He also runs periodic low grade fevers. Are these symptoms of thyroid cancer?
