two different tsh test results - advice on what to do

Two weeks ago a routine blood test showed a TSH of 5.6.  The results that came back today show a TSH of 1.8.  Any advice/experience of having different results?  I am scheduled for a thyroid u/s today.  Thanks.

My T4 was 8.4 and T3 was 277.  Any additonal thoughts?  They did not see anything on the thyroid ultrasound.  Thanks for you input.

Could you also give us the ranges listed on that lab report so we can see where yours falls into it?
Also, you'll hear this a lot from us out here and I know Christine will agree but antibodies tests can diagnose autoimmune thyroid disease, before hormone levels become abnormal. Believe it or not, some Dr.s don't know this, personal experience told me this.
My lab ranges were abnormal back when I was diagnosed but I didn't know the cause of the hypothyroid until two years later when I insisted on an antibodies test.

The difference in the test results could be a result of hashimotos antibodies. It also could be from what time of day you were tested and if you ate. I went from a TSH of 77 to 9.8 in a span of a few weeks, but I do have the antibodies, which causes the TSH to flucuate. I would suggest to keep on top of this and make sure you get copies of all labs and any other tests they perform. I tell everyone to be proactive in your own medical care. While thyroid disorders are very common, most doctors are not sure of the best course of action. Are you having any type of symptoms?

Dittos on what Christine01 said, Hashimoto's can cause you to swing back & forth between hyper and hypothyroid readings and the antibodies test is the best way to diagnose, so would ask for it to be done.
ALSO: I'll probably be harping on this for a while but if you get a chance, read my two posts under the heading "Have you read Mary Shomon's Article". I posted this yesterday but I'll bet there is info. in it that will be a revelation to you. Make sure and go to the site I suggest as well, when you can.

You might not even have a thyroid issue, but it is better to be safe then sorry. If you do not have symptoms now, you dont want any down the road.

My t4 was 8.7 and t3 was 277.  They took a 3rd blood test and my tsh was 7.8 - so only 1 of 3 blood test showed an elevated tsh.  I also took the ultrasound and they showed small nodules.  Doctor is suggesting an uptake - should I do it?  I think the first blood test was wrong and has caused these other tests to be ordered - any advice?  Thanks.
