ultrasound report

by dmat998, Oct 17, 2007 10:11AM
I recently had an ultra sound done on my thyroid. I was hoping you could help me understand what it means. Findings:The left 3.3 cm bipolar x 0.8 cm AP and is homogeneous without mass.
The right lobe measures 5.5 cm bipolar x 1.3 cm AP. In the anterior
upper pole there is a 3 mm hypoechoic nodule likely an incidental hypoplastic nodule.
Impression: Asymetric prominence of the right lobe containing single 3 mm nodule.
Any insight would be great . Thanks

Sounds fairly normal -- small (3mm) nodules are not uncommon -- it's about 10%/decade of life incidence -- ie about 50% of 50yo's have a small nodule.  The R lobe is usually larger than the L -- so the asymmetry is fine.  No biopsy is needed for this situation.  Perhaps repeat US in one yeaer to ensure it does not enlarge significantly.
