Dr. Lupo please advise

Oct 2012 came down with a fever a few days later my thyriod swelled up. ended in ent office have ultrasound biopsy which showed  a 2.40cmx2.58xcmx4.95cm volume 16.0 ml. Biopsy came back negative for cancer. Was told that the right lobe needed to come out. Went to see a surgeon for a second opinion who sent me to see an endocronolgist who recomended surgery. so back to the surgeon who agreed but sent me for another ultrasound
before he did surgery. went and had ultrasound done and there was no nodule. So surgeon sent me for a blood test to see if possible if i have hashimotos and that was 2 days ago so i am waiting for my results. I am so confused and this has pretty much a nightmare believing that I needed my thyriod removed and a few days before my surgery was told there was no nodule. If you have any information for me it would be greatly appreciated. I am still hyper but its not as intense as it was before. Thanks for any information you may have.

Hashimoto's can cause "pseudonodules" - but a nodule that measures nearly 5cm "vanishing" needs further explanation.  Best to see an endocrinologist who does his/her own ultrasound to clarify that the 'nodule' was not simply one thyroid lobe with a inflammatory changes.  You mention that the thyroid "swelled up" -- and you are hyper --- another very likely scenario is transient thyroiditis which can cause ultrasound changes mimicking nodules that then resolve.  Would hold on any surgical decision until this is sorted out.  Would also consider having the FNA slides sent for another opinion as this is a good way to clarify nodule vs. thyroiditis.
