Hashimoto Goiter or Multinodular Goiter

So, one minute my doctor says it is Graves Disease, then Hashimoto Goiter and now it is a Multinodular Goiter, cause it is on both sides of my thyroid, yet my thyroid is functioning properly. Don't understand, could my smoking have an affect on the nodules?? In 2003, I only had it on one side, now 5 years later I have it on both sides. Is this possible?? What causes these nodules to appear?? Is it something that I am doing or not doing? Thank-you

see other post - we don't know exactly what causes nodules -- usually it is nothing you are doing or not doing -- next step is biopsy
