Parathyroidectomy

Dr Lipo  Had parathyyidectomy last week. Surgeon said all 4 were hyper took out 3 1/2 he mentioned multiple endocrine neoplasm. Isnt this rare   Should I be tested for MEN 1. I have several children and would want them to know if I have a disease they could inherit. I also had graves with radioactive iodine treatment 8 years ago. I see endocrinologist tomorrow. Would like to know if I should mention this.  Thank you

This can happen and is usually not associated w/ MEN syndromes.  Your endocrinologist can explore this option though.  I-131 treatment can increase the risk of parathyroid overactivity -- so that may be the cause.
