1/2 thyroid- need meds?

The surgeon will take out 1/2 my thyroid.  He said I might need meds if the other half isn't producing enough to keep me level.  
What do you think the chance of needing meds with 1/2 a thyroid is?  Is this a 'likely' thing or 'unlikely' thing?
