8 days post RAI and face is swollen

by Liz94, Feb 01, 2008 09:49AM
Here I sit 8 days after RAI and 7 days back on meds and my face has decided to swell like a big fat fish. What's the deal?  My right eye is almost swollen shut and under my eyes is very swollen. I also feel tremendous pressure behind my eyes. What the heck? Anyone else have this?  I thought being back on meds things would start improving, and they are for the most part, but this swelling thing is new. Having my scan today and will try and ask the radiologist but he probably won't know.  Anyone???

I had swelling for at least a month afterwards.  The facial swelling went down fairly quickly - about 2 weeks, but the swelling in the rest of my body took at least two more,,,  I do have to say that I never had my eyes swell shut (swollen, but not shut) or pain behind them.  Most of the swelling I had was in my neck by my ears.  I looked like a linebacker!!!  And it did FREAK me out!

Try elevating your head at night--It should help with your swelling in the face and eyes.

I experienced swelling of my parotid glands which lasted about 2 weeks.  Ice felt good.

You're probably still pretty hypo.  My face got really puffy while off my med before RAI, but not so bad as eyes swelling almost shut.  When is your next TSH test?  My TSH was 42 the week after my RAI.

My TSH was 136 yesterday, 7 days after RAI. I talked to the endo and he said it's a common side effect of the iodine. But I don't like how it feels to have such pressure behind my eyeballs. It's freaking me out! He said to take 600 mg of ibuprofin 3 times a day for 3 days. I did that today and it had no effect whatsoever. Geez, when will the nightmare end?

I forgot all about this.  Yeah, I had it too.  I put cold packs on my eyes at night.  I thought it was just a messed up TSH and headache.  Hmmmm

Try the ice - hang in there Liz!
