Adding Cytomel to Synthroid ????

Happy New Year Everyone!

I was just wondering...my endo prescribed Cytomel (FINALLY) 5mcg daily to add to my Synthroid which she upped to 88mcg daily. Should I cut the Cytomel in 1/2 and take it twice a day instead of once a day? I know I have read posts here that say that it is short-lived and that taking it in 2 doses might be better.

Any thoughts????? Thanks so much! I am hoping that the T3 helps me feel better. I have VERY HIGH hopes for this...hoping this is the missing piece to my thyroid puzzle!!!

Thanks again!

Thank you so much for all of the replies. I think I am going to try taking it later in the day in a whole dose first. I have taken it the past 2 days in the morning with my Synthroid. I felt great until about 3PM so maybe taking it later will help. I normally feel good in the morning anyway...

Hopefully this will help as I am still on the lower end of the free T3 range and maybe once I get to the upper end...I will see some changes :)

Thanks and Happy New Year!!!!

Hi,

I have a lot of experience with cytomel.  I "feel" 5 mcg when I take it after lunch each day.  You can experiment with taking 2.5 with your synthroid in am and then 2.5, 6 hours later.  This is how I started my cytomel and for me I felt I needed more in the afternoon, since that is when I crash.

Dont forget to get a free t3 level with your labs so that you can see if you are in the upper range.

Good luck

I shouldn't have said "at night" in my post.  I meant at noon.  Half at noon.  It just plain kept me up, no matter how close to the first dose I took the second.  The only thing that worked for me was to take it all in the am.  But it really depends on how you metabolize it and how much your body really "needs" of it.

I think it really depends on how *your* body processes the Cytomel.  I'd try both and see which works for you.  I'm with Stella in that 5mcg is a very small dose and may not do much either way.  But I found taking half in the morning and half at night was not for me.  It kept me up at night.  But my ratio was vastly different than yours at the time I was having that issue.  Now I only take 15mcg's.  All in the morning.  And I even have backed off of that amount due to my TSH being SO low right now....

I think twice a day is good - but your dosage is pretty low. You could try - but I don't know if 2.5 is high enough to feel the difference throughout the day.

I never did Cytomel so that is a guess. I do however take and split my Armour with a built in direct T3 through out the day - and I do much better than taking it all at once. I however am on a higher dose than you.
