Advice on Test Results

Hi - I had 2 miscarriages at 5 weeks in the last 3 months and my doctor does not think I need to take thyroid medicine since my TSH was within their range. But I have very high antibodies and they are linked to miscarriage. It seems like I have an issue right when the fetus implants. All my other miscarriage tests came back fine. I don't have any symptoms. Can you let me know what you think based of my new numbers? Does it seems like this is Hashimoto's?

T4 (Thyroxine): 4.6 (reference 4.5 - 12.5)
T3 183 (reference: 80 - 200)
T4 Free: 1.2 (reference .8 - 1.7)
TSH 3.55 (reference .45 - 4.5)
TPO: 467 (reference <35)
Thyroglobulin: 695 (reference <41)

Thank you.

Don't know exactly what the numbers point to, I had Graves' not Hashi's.  But I think you need to seriously consider NOT getting pregnant until you ask your gyn about it.  If you have any kind of thyroid autoimmune disease it can cause MAJOR birth defects and retardation in babies.  And if it didn't there would be a very good chance of passing antibodies on to baby so that it would be born with thyroid problems.

A friend of mine's cousin had a baby before she knew she had Graves' and the baby was horribly deformed.  My endo, at the time, told me to absolutely not get pregnant.

Not trying to scare you to death, just want you to know what the possibilities could be.  I am sorry about the miscarriages, I had 2 of my own and I know how devestating they are.  But I know that God is just looking after us.  He will not give us more than we can handle.

It does not look like Hashimoto's
You dont need medication either.
Recurrent abortion means you have to think about any chromosomal defection or SLE. Medication can be a cause
What is your age?

Hi - I am 29 years old. I had the chromosonal tests done and my husband and I came out normal. It could be random chromosonal issues which is the main cause for chemical pregnancies. What is SLE? Why don't you think I need to treat the antibodies? Thank you!

I really don't know about the antibodies, but I can tell you that I have hashimoto's and I've had many m/c at 5 weeks and 1 at almost 8 weeks.  My hypothyroidism was discovered at 7 weeks with my oldest son.  My hashimoto's and thyca was discovered 6 months post partum.  I have since then had one more living son and one more m/c at 4 weeks.  Definitely consult your OBGYN before proceeding to more TTCing.

I was wondering why the Dr asked me at my ultrasound whether I was planning on having more kids.  Are there any other thyroid issues that can affect your pregnancy?  Or are there any issues with thyroid medications?  I had thought it was a strange question at the time, and didn't think to ask why he wanted to know.

Any thyroid issue can affect pregnancy.  The most common that I know of is that you do inherit thyroid problems, but if you get pregnant while you have them they can be born with the problem.
I started having symptoms immediately after my son was born so am concerned that I may have had the problems when I was pregnant with him and passed it on in utero.  My 7 1/2 yr old is showing early signs of thyroid problems and have had ped run TSH, it was almost 2, a little higher than I would have expected it to be so will be keeping an eye on it.  Am also going to talk to my endo about it when I go back.

When I had my RAI to kill off thyroid they told me that as soon as my levels were good I could go ahead and get pregnant, no problem.  Problem.  My levels have just now been brought into normal, all these years later.  So, as I understand it, after treatment and normalizing your levels you can have all the kids you want.  =)

Hope this helps you out some.  I am definitely no expert on this so you probably want to ask your dr to be sure.

PLEASE check with OBGYN before trying to get pregnant again.

SLE--systemic lupus erythematosus.  Didn't read up on it, but did look it up to see what it meant for you.

If you are only going to a gp you need to find an endocrinologist who deals with lots of thyroid problems or a thyroid specialist.  This is a very specialized field and should not be handled by just any dr.  Insist on a referral if you have to, but please make sure you follow up on this with specialist.  I would NOT take anyone else's word on not needing treatment.  We are not the experts, and you need someone who is.  The antibodies being present is not a good sign.

Good luck and keep us posted.
